Cholesterol levels-What are they?

As we become older there are many issues that are of strong concern with our health. We will think of the importance of getting various physical check-ups for a varity of health concerns. You will think of your heart, kidneys, liver, mammogram, eye vision, diabetes, hypertension and the list goes on.

Of course we will need to know this one, your cholesterol levels. One may ask why is this so important to know?  Here is the definition of what cholestrol is.

A waxy substance found in your body that is needed to produce hormones, vitamin D and bile. Cholesterol is also important for protecting nerves and for the structure of cells. It is important to keep your cholesterol levels that are healthy limits. Why? Because you don’t want to be at risk for heart disease.

There are three categories of cholesterol levels to know.

  • Total cholesterol
  • HDL cholesterol
  • LDL cholesterol

Your lifestye will have a lot to do with your cholesterol levels and it takes some changes that will have a great impact on your overall health. For instance, changing your diet to more fiber, keeping your weight down, not smoking will help a great deal, not eating a lot of greasy foods from your meats and dairy products and developing an regular exercise program at least an half an hour a day doing this about 4-5 days. You can gain the control you need with making sure that your cholesterol levels are in check by practicing and re-positioning your lifestyle.
